  • To be fair to Donny, he doesn’t have ideology either. All he has is his own narcissism.

There’s no policy consistency whatsoever from Trump’s first term to his second term. The free trade agreements that he is now so unceremoniously dumping by imposing tariffs are the very same ones HE signed during his first term!

Trump has no plan whatsoever. He just flies by the seat of his pants and licks the boots of the biggest authoritarian assholes he can find (Musk and Putin).

  • buried deep in the American zeitgeist

I think you mean American psyche. Zeitgeist means the spirit of the times. It usually refers to the present way of thinking or the way things were at one time.

The American psyche is much more of a timeless thing, stretching all the way back to the attitudes and beliefs of the founding fathers when they drafted the Declaration of Independence. Norman Rockwell’s paintings, Robert Frost’s poems, John Steinbeck’s books, the games of baseball and (gridiron) football. These are just some of the cultural artifacts said to be part of the American psyche.

  • Europe is saying all the right things but actions are another matter. When it comes to war, you can’t defeat the enemy by throwing money at them. You actually have to build the factories and manufacture weapons. Europe has been extremely unwilling to do that, instead preferring to buy weapons from the US.

Ukraine to their credit have been going all out to build their own military industrial base. Their domestic drone production is accelerating. They still need a lot of help with air defence systems, artillery shells, small arms, training, and logistics.

  • The greatest of all time was Blendo:

Designed by Jamie Hyneman (of Mythbusters fame). It consists of a 5hp lawnmower engine powering a circular saw blade, encased in a dome made from a wok. The thing was so dangerous Jamie almost lost a foot starting it up (using the ripcord to start the lawnmower engine).

It was undefeated. It tore the ever-loving hell out of anything it faced, frequently launching dismembered parts of its opponents into the crowd at terrifying velocity. It was simply too dangerous to be allowed to continue competing, so it was retired!

  • Carbon steel and cast iron cookware have reactive metal surfaces that will rust if left exposed to moisture and air, especially when heated. To use these materials of cookware you need to season them which involves washing the surface clean and applying a very thin layer of oil which you then heat up to a high temperature (usually past the smoke point, but not strictly necessary).

The heating of oil in contact with the metal causes the oil molecules to polymerize and bond to the metal surface. Done properly, this gives your cast iron and carbon steel cookware a smooth, glassy, slightly brown protective polymer layer which prevents rust and helps foods release (though not as well as nonstick pans). The seasoning process can be repeated as many times as you like and it builds up more and more layers which darken over time. A well seasoned piece of cast iron or carbon steel cookware will look shiny and jet black, though this is not necessary for cooking.

The downside of these materials is that acidic or basic foods can damage the polymer layer and dissolve it right off the pan with enough heat and cooking time. Tomato sauce is a classic example of an acidic food that will eat away at the seasoning of a cast iron or carbon steel pan. A well seasoned pan can still be used to cook a tomato sauce, but not one you plan to be simmering for hours and hours (like some Sunday meat sauce like you’d see in Goodfellas).

Stainless steel (as well as enameled or porcelain coated) cookware is nonreactive so you can use it to cook acidic or basic foods no problem!

Everyone is doing something. Working, going to school, living their lives. Even people who have no job, who walk the streets, are doing something: surviving.

Most people’s survival instincts prevent them from taking drastic measures like this, even when things are really bad. Think of how many people who had every incentive to take a shot at Hitler but did not, despite all the horrors of the Nazi regime.
