  • You’ve done nothing to try to convince me that I am incorrect. You’ve not engaged with my original argument with any logical reasoning or facts. You haven’t even tried. All you’ve done is degrade my degrees and try to bully me out of my opinion like a little school child. In fact, I am beginning to suspect I really am speaking to a child – even wishing that you could physically smack me instead when losing an argument.

Nothing I said is revisionism but solid fact. It is simply making new conclusions on new emerging research and historical sources – something that you have no idea about because you’re not a historian. Historians disagree all the time on the same historical events. You’d know this if you ever read more than one book on the same historical topic instead of taking the first one you read as gospel.

I stand by what I originally said. You are not equipped to debate history.

  • You’re 10-ply bud. The only person showing a gross lack of humility here is you. I’d go into depth on why what you said is stupid and is bad history, but smart words are wasted on deaf ears. I can tell you all the historical facts backed by primary sources all day, but I can’t teach critical thinking. That lack is critical thinking is what got you here. But hey, go ahead and keep on using bigger words to shield against that fragile, threatened, intellect of yours. I’m sure it will make us agree with you more instead of actually citing sources or doing any attempt to explain why you think what you said made any sense. So far you argument is “Field Marshal Zhukov said otherwise once” and your source is “trust me”, and hiding behind the opinions of unnamed peoples who are more accredited than me (therefore default right-er-er than me!!), along with copious, pitiful, abrasive ad hominen attacks (I know big words too!!).

Real talk. I don’t know what you do for a living, but I recommend you stay in your lane and I’ll stay in mine. The electrician shouldn’t tell a plumber how to bend pipes. Whatever brainrot is making you sanctify a long dead Field Marshal of the USSR, one responsible for the extremely brutality on the civilians of East Germany and especially Berlin, you should do some serious introspection as to why. You glorifying this man shows you are severely detached from reality, let alone equipped to debate history.

Oh, and I’m under no pretense to be polite or humble when talking about history here. This isn’t a history conference, its an anonymous forum. I can be as crass or rude as I want here. Frankly, I should’ve just told you to pound sand instead of writing all this out. Do me a favour, and trust me when I say that what you said and think is stupid as hell. Your homework is to use the boundless expanse of the educational internet to figure out why. I say this with sass yet genuine concern; educate yourself better. Your mind deserves better.

  • Didn’t realize that a Field Marshal of the Soviet Union is the be all end all of opinions about WW2 and the participation of the US in it. Next you’ll be asking me to follow Douglas MacArthur’s opinions on the Korean War!

Get real. The US showed up in WW1 in 1917, long after the Central powers were exhausted. In WW2, the US showed up in 1941. On the pacific front, the Japanese had been fighting China since 1933. In Europe, the Germans had been fighting since 1939. In both wars, the homefront was entirely untouched unlike the rest of the world, setting up the US with a massive head economic head start in the post-war period.

But hey, go on, lecture to the person with two history degrees from a US university on why your dead Soviet Field Marshal’s opinion is more correct about the US’s participation in the war than me.

    • Rimworld is created by Tynan Sylvester, who lives in Ottawa. Fantastic colony sim game that still gets consistent and major updates alongside the DLC releases.

    • Torn Banner Studios, creators of Chivalry and Chivalry 2, the Medieval multiplayer combat games are also Based in Toronto. They recently declared Chiv 2 to be a completed game, ceasing anynew content updates but still supporting the servers and community. They seem to be cooking up something new, but no info yet.

    • Hinterland Studios, creators of The Long Dark, a survival game, are based in Vancouver. The game is slower paced with realistic survival mechanics in rural north BC I believe. It’s not abandoned, but updates very slowly. Cool devs though.

All of these games have active dev and fan communities. Rimworld has a SUPER talented & stable modding community.

  • That’s where I’m kinda at at the moment too. Just fucking do it or don’t already. If you don’t want to buy our shit just don’t and we will find new markets to sell to. There is an endless queue of people in line to buy Canadian goods, raw resource or manufactured. It’s just that the US always made the most geographic and geopolitical sense.

If this is actually an attempt to bring manufacturing jobs back to America (a fruitless and losing battle for most industries but still), then all they had to do was give Canadian industries a heads up “hey, we are gonna slowly wean off of you guys, nothing personal. Hope you find new markets.” Simple as. They are not obligated to buy our shit and we aren’t obligated to sell it to them either. They’re the assholes who pressured us into these free trade agreements and now they’re upset that the “invisible hand” of capitalism isn’t giving them a handy or has a inherent pro-American bias.

Just a bunch of children that are upset that the rest of the world has finally caught up and/or recovered from the destruction of WW2 and can genuinely compete with the US in just about every regard, especially education and industry. American exceptionalism is only real in the sense that America was the exception to the mass destruction and loss of life in both world wars by being fucking pussies that joined both world wars late and after the enemy was already thoroughly exhausted and bled dry by the Allies. There is nothing particularly remarkable about America in the modern world excluding its vast natural resources and severely over-funded military. They love capitalism but not competition.

  • Tbf, my first foray into reddit-like federated alternatives was Kbin, and that did actually die.

Originally lemmy just did not interest me because it felt like the only early adopters of it were the CS and techbro crowd. But now two years later I’m seeing what seem like regular people that I’m more able to relate and discuss with, with more variety in content and communities available. Plus, I’m browsing lemmy using the old reddit format which I am still stubbornly using to this day on actual reddit. So now I am using lemmy in a format that is identical to how my reddit usually looks. I could have lemmy on one monitor, reddit on the other, and not tell the difference. Maybe petty, but its a big deal for me.

There is still a pretty big lapse on communities relevant to me tbh, but there is still enough to warrant me to visit lemmy more often. For example, I am a historian/museum professional, and the history communities heres are practically dead to non-existent. Many of the communities I am interested in are simply forking posts from reddit or simply posting news article links. But, I suppose that is the part where I stop being a lurker and be the change I want to see in the world. It is a bit more enticing and exciting to make posts knowing that a much smaller but more engaged community will see it. On reddit, it feels like pointlessly screaming at the void.

Regardless, after two years it is kinda clear that lemmy is here to stay. It seems to have survived the great filter that most other federated alternatives did not during the initial reddit api buzz.

Anyways, thats just my perspective as a completely random not technologically advanced person views and viewed lemmy.

  • I had someone post in the r/saskatchewan subreddit about lemmy.ca, and I had forgotten all about lemmy or that I even had an account on here already until they mentioned it.

Other social media sucks for sure, but OP has a point here. Lemmy is still at the stage where people only enter if they are told/reminded it exists. I genuinely thought lemmy died already. People finding lemmy naturally is very unlikely at this stage. It’s word of mouth, so the people here gotta start wording and mouthing about it.
